A championship course with water, wind, and Caribbean soul — for golfers who play for the love of the game.
Imagine standing on a sun-drenched fairway, a warm Caribbean breeze on your face, and the sound of the ocean in the distance and almost no one else around.
While most European golfers automatically think of Spain, Portugal, or Florida when planning a golf holiday, Tobago quietly offers something far more special. This small, unspoiled island in the southern Caribbean combines world-class natural beauty with a relaxed golfing experience that is simply impossible to find in mainstream destinations.
The pace here is slower, the fairways less crowded, and the setting more natural than almost any busy international golf resort you have ever visited. No pretentious clubhouses, no high-pressure tournaments, no marshals breathing down your neck. Instead: quiet greens, ocean views from the tee box, and the kind of peace that makes every swing feel like a moment of pure joy.
At the heart of this experience is the Tobago Plantations Golf Course — an 18-hole, par-72 championship layout built across a former coconut plantation on the island's southwest coast, with lakes, mangroves, and the Atlantic itself woven into play. For golfers who want a genuine championship test right on their doorstep, this is the island's clear first choice.
History – A Championship Course on a Former Coconut Plantation
The Tobago Plantations Golf Course opened in 2001 and was redesigned in 2013. It was laid out by Bob Hunt and Marcus Blackburn of PGA Golf Management Ltd (formerly PGA Design Consulting / IGD) across the grounds of an old coconut plantation within the Tobago Plantations Estate, in the island's south-west near Lowlands — which is why locals and guides alike simply call the area "Plantations Lowlands."
Its championship pedigree is real: between 2002 and 2005, the course hosted the Tobago Plantations Seniors Classic, an official European Seniors Tour event that drew professional golfers over 50 from across the world. By 2005 the tournament offered $250,000 in total prize money, with $37,500 going to the champion — a serious purse that put this quiet Caribbean course firmly on the international golf map.
The Course – Water, Wind, and a Championship Pedigree
The Tobago Plantations Golf Course plays to a par of 72 over 18 holes, with four tee positions on every hole — meaning it genuinely suits everyone, from a first-time visitor to a scratch golfer chasing a low round. Unlike Tobago's hillier inland courses, this layout is flat and resort-friendly, but do not mistake flat for easy: lakes, woodland thickets, mangroves, wild grass, and beach frontage are woven into nearly every hole, and pot bunkers guard the greens with old-school precision.
The signature holes: Hole 3 is the one golfers talk about long after their round — the green sits barely 30 metres from the Atlantic surf, with the ocean genuinely in play. Elsewhere on the course, a par-4 "peninsula" hole rewards a confident tee shot with panoramic views across the water to Scarborough, Tobago's capital, and the open Atlantic beyond.
Because water hazards, rather than elevation or length, do most of the defending here, strategy and club selection matter more than raw power — a course that rewards the thinking golfer just as much as the long hitter.

If you want to mix things up during your stay, Tobago has a second, very different test just a short drive away. Mount Irvine Golf Course, near Plantations Lowlands is an older layout. Opened in 1968 and designed by Commander John Harris it is set on rolling, wind-exposed terrain with a dramatic cliffside hole above the ocean. Where Tobago Plantations plays flat and strategic around water, Mount Irvine is hillier, windier, and more rugged. Playing both during a single trip gives you a genuine taste of everything Caribbean golf has to offer.
